Dear Parents / Caregivers

All students have now completed their first Sexual Development Education session with either a Public Health Nurse (Community Health Waikato), Pacific Family Education or Raukawa Trust Board facilitator.  We encourage parents to talk to their children about the content of the programme.  A reminder to parents that you are able to attend the sessions with the students.

House Captains' Assemblies

One type of leadership available to our students is that of being a House Captain.  There are sixteen House Captains with two students (one boy and one girl from each House) being on stage and taking some part in Friday assemblies.  There are also House Captains assemblies (eight a year) where the students are responsible for the assemblies.  This involves organising a guest speaker and introducing and thanking them through to speaking to the assembly, presenting awards and certificates and ensuring that the assembly runs smoothly.  This is a task many adults would find difficult.  Parents are welcome to attend our Friday assemblies as it is an opportunity to get a “feeling for the tone of the school”.

Judo Success

One of our Year 8 students, Danni Arnell, competed in the Victorian International Open Championship for judo in Melbourne, Australia.  Danni was chosen for the development squad to gain some more experience.  She loved the experience and topped it off by winning a silver medal.  Congratulations to Danni, who I know will have been a credit to not only her family, but to Tokoroa and New Zealand.

Vision Screening

Vision Hearing Technicians from Community Health will be visiting Thursday, 1 September.  The objective of the visit is to identify previously undetected vision defects.

All Year 7 students will be screened
All Year 7 boys will also have a colour vision check

If any parents / guardians do not want their child to be checked or their child is currently under specialist care for a vision defect, they should let the school know.  Other students will be checked if there is a genuine reason for concern about them.

This will not be a complete vision examination, but a simple screening test.  When an unsatisfactory result is obtained it will be necessary for the Technician to obtain personal details, i.e. home address and date of birth, and parents / guardians will be advised to seek further advice.
