Last Day of Term 2

End of Term 2 is this Friday.  School will finish at the normal time.  Term 3 will commence on Monday 25 July.  It is important that students return on Monday and do not extend their holidays by one or two days as most classes start new units of work on the first day of the term.  Students who are not at school on the 25th are therefore on the “back foot” from the beginning of the term.

Education Review Office Report

Over the last four weeks there have been extracts from our recent ERO Report.  This is the last of the statements from the report.  Parents are welcome to the full ERO Report which is available from school.

Information Landscaping (Gaining information from the Information Centre (library) and Information Communication Technology – mainly computers and internet use).

Areas of Good Performance

Focus on essential learning skills: The school’s library and information services are having a significant and positive impact on student learning and achievement, particularly in reading.  Students are participating in well-defined curriculum programmes delivered by their classroom teacher that enable them to develop the essential skills in finding information in books and researching using the internet.  This approach is developing their critical inquiry skills, research strategies and introducing them to new knowledge.

Positive dispositions towards learning: Students demonstrate high levels of enthusiasm for learning.  They are able to speak out readily about their enquiries, research processes and personal reading preferences.  The vibrant library information centre environment encourages them to interact with and select diverse reading materials.

Resource provision: Learning resources are highly accessible, well organised and increasingly culturally diverse.  This wide and rich variety of resources enables teachers to provide learning materials that interest and engage students with diverse learning styles.  The board make an annual commitment to financing significant money to provide these options.  Quality resources motivate students and enhance their capacity to become lifelong learners.

Access to the information facilities: The library’s timetable and operating hours, together with the availability of support staff before and after school, and during morning breaks and lunchtimes maximises access for students to books and computers.  Effective computer equipment and systems are available to provide user-friendly access to information including the monitored use of the internet.  Students often use the facility to study, complete work and for recreational time.  They are able to locate sources of information to assist them with their studies.

Property and Computer Development

There is some modernisation work being carried out in the school resource room during the holidays.  As a result of last years review of science we are not only focussing on improving the delivery of science (the reason for the considerable amount of Professional Development work being carried out using the University of Waikato), but improved resources for teachers and students to use.  This of course means more money being spent on the science budget as well as improved housing of the equipment.  The carpentry work being undertaken in the resource room is to safely store the school science equipment and resources.  With the increase in computer numbers (we now have sixty eight computers networked for student use) we need to upgrade the network backbone to fibre optic and add another server.  This will be carried out in the holidays at a cost of approximately $20,000.00.
