Dear Parents / Caregivers

I hope parents who attended the Meet the Teacher Evening last night found it beneficial.  A reminder to parents that we have an “open door policy”.  If you have any queries or concerns please contact the class teacher to make an appointment to meet him/her.  The appointment avoids parents coming up to school and not being able to meet the teacher because they are teaching or in a meeting.  In three weeks “Settling in Reports” will be sent home to parents.  There will be more information on “Settling in Reports” in a future newsletter.

Te Reo Maori Option

A newsletter will be given to students who wish to join the Te Reo Maori programme.  If your child did not bring home a “Te Reo Maori Option” newsletter and you are interested in finding out more, or would like him or her to join, please ask your child to bring home the newsletter or contact the school so we can get one to you.

Short Days

If the lunch time is shortened by half an hour because of wet weather, school will finish at 2:40 p.m.  If parents want to know whether or not we are finishing early, please phone 886 0804 after 12:15 p.m.

How Can You Help Your Child Succeed St School?

Parents often ask teachers how they can help their child to do well at school.  I believe all parents want the best for their children and for them to succeed at school.  Many of the ways parents can help are very simple.  I have compiled a list from several articles which identify common elements found in students who achieve at school.

  • They have healthy breakfasts and lunches
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Go to bed between 8:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
  • Attend school regularly
  • Clothes are washed regularly
  • Parents/guardians attend School Report and Parent Evenings
  • They visit doctors as required (early intervention)
  • Homework is completed
  • There are books in the home
  • Parents know where their children are after school and especially after dark
  • Parents spent time with their children and support their activities and sports
  • Parents encourage their children’s success at school
  • Parents have realistic aspirations and expectations for their children’s success at school, on sports field, etc
  • Parents support the school and their child’s teacher.
If the first three points identified don’t occur, there is a strong likelihood that your child is going to struggle to learn no matter how good the class programme and teacher is.  If you can put a tick next to all thirteen points, there is a very good chance your child will succeed.
