Dear Parents / Caregivers I have been very
impressed with the way students have settled back into school - especially the
students who are attending for the first time. BULLYING We are endeavouring to reduce and if possible, eliminate bullying. We want students to feel safe and enjoy school. We have already spoken to all students about bullying at our first assembly and will continue to re-visit it on a regular basis. If your child is being bullied, he/she needs to let the class teacher know so appropriate action can be taken. Students have been told this. If you find your child is being bullied and has not reported it, please let either me, Brian Fisher or Jan Stobie (Deputy Principals) know about it. SHORT DAYS If the lunch time is shortened by half an hour because of wet weather, school will finish at 2:40 p.m. If parents want to know whether or not we are finishing early, please phone 886 0804 after 12:15 p.m. CANTEEN PRICES Listed are the current canteen prices. Students order their lunch as soon as they arrive at school.
ENROLMENT FORMS As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, Year 7 and new students will bring home an enrolment form to be filled in. Although some parents filled the form in last year, we need to make sure our records are up to date in case of emergencies. For students who identify as Maori, their iwi is also required. An information sheet from the Ministry of Education explaining this has been supplied. We appreciate parents’ support in filling in the forms and returning them to school. MENINGITIS B IMMUNISATION PROGRAMME 2006 The Meningococcal B Immunisation Programme has now started over the whole Waikato District Health Board area. This programme is for children and young people aged from six months up to twenty years. Children under five years of age, and those up to twenty who are no longer at school, are already being vaccinated at medical centres and GP practices. School children will be vaccinated at school in a programme beginning at the end of March. For Tokoroa Intermediate School, the first vaccination is Monday, 11 April. Three separate vaccinations approximately six weeks apart are necessary for effective immunisation. Vaccination is free to every child at school and will be administered by Public Health Nurses in a very controlled and supervised environment. Meningococcal Immunisation information will be sent out to all parents. I have spoken to the Public Health Nurse with regards holding a parents’ meeting at our school so questions / queries parents have can be answered. The Public Health Nurse will get back to me with regards the meeting. PARENT EVENING Tuesday, 15 February, 7:30 p.m. in our hall. This is an opportunity to find out about this year’s Education Outside the Classroom Programme, other school programmes (Special Needs, Reading Tutors, Extension Programmes, School Targets) as well as meet your child’s class teacher. STUDENT ABSENCES If your child is away from school, we would appreciate a phone call as we carry out absence checks every day and use the services of Tokoroa Truancy Service. Our school is working with the Ministry of Education on an initiative to reduce absenteeism. There will be further details of this in future newsletters. SCHOOL DISCIPLINE PLAN Attached to today’s newsletter is the School’s Discipline Plan which is a Board of Trustee Policy. It is important parents, as well as students, know what our Discipline Plan involves. Link to Discipline Plan SWIMMING SPORTS The school swimming sports will be held on Wednesday, 16 February between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the town pools. Heats for the following events will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon.
All students not required for the finals will then
return to school at 12:30 p.m. for lunch and a normal afternoon school
programme. The Finals Programme will begin after a lunch break at
approximately 1:00 p.m. Students who are not swimming will remain at
school and carry on their normal school programme. If you are able to
contribute some time to help with the running of this event, please contact Mr
Hopkinson at school - Phone 886 7687. We require help with timekeeping. BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING Wednesday, 16 February at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room (Administration area of the school). Agenda will be available from the school office on Monday, 14 February. NETBALL If there are any parents, aunties, uncles or High School students who would like to coach a netball team this year, could you please send a note with your child to Room 16 or get in contact with the school and leave a message for Miss Potoru.
